How do you validate a product idea?

Updated · by Vouch

Short answer

Validate a product idea by separating the problem from your solution. First confirm the problem is frequent, expensive and already being worked around — through 10 interviews about past behaviour. Only then show a prototype, and judge it on whether people commit money, time or data, not on whether they say they like it.

Step-by-step

  1. 1
Validate the problem before the product

Ask about frequency, cost and current workaround. A problem that happens twice a year and costs an hour is real but not a product.

  2. 2
Write down what would prove you wrong

For each belief, write the observation that would kill it. Evidence only counts when it could have gone the other way.

  3. 3
Show a prototype last, never first

Once the story is out, a clickable mockup or a rough page tests comprehension and price — but only after the problem stands on its own.

  4. 4
Ask for a commitment, not an opinion

Money, a calendar slot, a data export, an intro to their boss. Costly commitments are the only reliable proxy for future purchase.

  5. 5
Score every interview against the beliefs

Mark each belief confirmed, contradicted or unknown with the quote attached. Patterns show up by interview six, not in your memory.

Frequently asked

What is the difference between problem validation and product validation?

Problem validation proves the pain is frequent and expensive. Product validation proves your specific solution is the one they will pay for. Doing them in the wrong order is why polished products launch to silence.

How many users should I test a product idea with?

Ten interviews for the problem, five commitment asks for the solution. Bigger samples rarely change the decision at this stage.

Can I validate a product idea with a landing page?

A landing page tests message and curiosity. Add a real payment or deposit step and it starts testing demand.

How do I validate a feature idea for an existing product?

Find the customers already hacking around its absence, then offer the outcome manually to a few of them. If nobody is hacking around it, it is a preference, not a need.
